Recaş is 37 km from Lugoj and 21 km from Timişoara along the DN6 (European route E70). The first written mentions of the town are found in feudal chronicles; in 1359 it appears under the name of Rykas. Over the years Recaş has been in turn a feudal domain, a fortress and a market town with 15 dependent villages. It has been under Ottoman, Austrian, Hungarian and Romanian administration.
From 1784-1786 onwards, as an effect of the process of colonisation of Banat, German colonists began to settle here. At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries Recaş experienced a time of very rapid development and became the centre of the economic and social life of the area. Situated as it is among sunny hills, with a temperate-continental climate, Recaş is the perfect place for vineyards. The town is famous for its rich wine production. The vineyards extend over an area of 700 ha and produce both dessert and wine grapes. You can visit Recaş Cellars with its vineyards on the sunny hills and attend wine tasting events organised in the depths of the over-50-year-old cellars.
